There were a number of factors that led us to being locavore gypsies. When my husband retired, we bought a small motor home to appease the nomad in him. Soon after, a book by a favorite author of mine, Barbara Kingslover, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle inspired us further towards the intriguing lifestyle with the profound wisdom it contains. I have always loved farmer’s markets, produce stands, open air markets, and overall, fresh foods prepared with regional originality. These were all catalysts, not to mention my love of cooking.
My love for cooking suffered greatly while traveling from one hotel to another before our motor home days. We would constantly seek out open air markets or little out of the way places, with unique culinary vibes. I would moan and groan about being exposed to so many exciting new foods. Often, they were not available in our hometown, at this time of year, or at this degree of freshness. It was torture to simply look but not touch.
Now with my kitchen with me, albeit 10 square feet, I can look, touch, smell, feel, buy, and create! The idea of following the harvest around the country was born of this excitement.
For the last two years we have driven across this great country of ours, searching out fresh foods and experiences.
Until we can get back on the road, I would like to write about the recipes inspired by our journeys and stories of those who so generously shared their knowledge and enthusiasm for fresh foods with us. Food can be the bridge that connects a community.
