I have so much to share, it has been a whirlwind week. Right now I have a little five minute break between preserving some of the amazing fruits and veggies from two farmers markets. The pie crust is coming to room temp, waiting for some water to boil for blanching, and butter to soften for a peach crumble. I didn’t purchase with plans of preserving, but my chief produce consumer has fallen quite ill.
After a wonderful and full day on Friday, John woke up in the middle of the night with severe stomach pains. He insisted I go in to Portland and visit the Saturday market, which I will tell you about in another post. By the time we got back he has worsened, and as the afternoon progressed so did his pain, fever and shakes. Being the macho “I am a man, I don’t need a Doctor” man that he is, he fought tooth and nail before I could get him to agree to go to the urgent care clinic. After some poking and prodding, vital checking and a million questions they sent us home with an antibiotic and some orange pee pills. The initial diagnosis before blood work a UTI quite unusual in men, but “we’ll let you know when his other labs come back” and we headed back to the RV. These are the times when traveling I am so thankful for my “condo on the go”. Can you imagine how nice it was to come home to our bed, in our nice quiet space, instead of returning to a hotel room when you feel that bad?
Later that night the Doctor calls and suggested we go on to the emergency room, for a CT scan, he was finally resting, I was torn between waking him and the risk of appendicitis. Fortunately he was awake and feeling slightly better, so we opted to wait til morning. It was a long night, I will spare you the details, but I was really beginning to worry it had been two days since he had anything to eat or drink. The pain was not letting up and his fevers came and went like a roller coaster still it took mom, dad and me to force him to the ER.
Two liters of IV fluids, three warmed blankets, two rounds of morphine in his IV, a cat scan, and blood work while we waited for him to pee, only eased the pain slightly. With new antibiotics, pain pills and anti nausea meds we were sent home with instructions to return if he hadn’t improved in 12 hours.
It is now 20 hours later still not much improvement, he is sleeping, buying time to avoid another trip to the ER but I am not convinced we will be here all day.
